People and their money is a series of paintings about the history of Zimbabwean people and their money. The coins were the first series of Zimbabwean money after independence in the period of 1980 – 1994 .The coins stopped circulation before the country fell into the hyperinflation years. The paintings are a replica of the coins in their various sizes.
The paintings represent narratives of the people who used these coins, historical relations between the then newly liberated country and its people. The coins were considered by many as ‘Change ‘Coins, which were a symbol of identity. People used to stand before any nation with their money with a promise and value. The series plays with the power of familiarity, reelection memories, pride and disappointment eventually questioning our state’s economic history.
